Topline

Facebook has shifted its remote work policy to let all of the company’s full-time employees continue working from home even after the pandemic if their job duties can be completed remotely, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees in an internal memo Wednesday, according to media reports.

Key Facts

All eligible employees can request to work from home from mid-June, although the tech giant noted it will adjust the salaries of employees who opt to move to less expensive cities, and that those workers will still be urged to go to the office for team-building, according to Bloomberg.

Facebook told employees who are required to come back to the office that they are expected to be at work in person “at least half the time,” as it gradually reopens its U.S. office locations.

The company expects to have opened the majority of its offices in the U.S. to at least half-capacity by September and fully reopened for employees by the following month.

Before the eligibility expansion, Facebook planned to allow only experienced employees and those with strong performance reviews to request permanent remote work. Facebook did not immediately respond to a Forbes request for comment.

Crucial Quote

“We’ve learned over the past year that good work can get done anywhere, and I’m even more optimistic that remote work at scale is possible, particularly as remote video presence and virtual reality continue to improve,” Zuckerberg wrote in the internal memo, according to CNBC.

Key Background

Zuckerberg has said before he believes working remotely would be a big part of Facebook’s future. Last year, he projected half of Facebook’s workforce would permanently work from home within the next decade. Twitter announced last year it would allow its workforce to work from home indefinitely, even after the pandemic subsides. Last week, dozens of Apple employees wrote an open letter to CEO Tim Cook calling on the company to be more flexible about remote working as Apple offices reopen. The company announced two days earlier it would require employees to work in-person at least three days a week from September.
